I work at the interface of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics, mostly on French. I study how social information, such as the image we build of the person speaking or writing, enters sentence processing.
Je travaille à l'interface de la psycholinguistique et de la sociolinguistique, surtout sur le français. Je m'intéresse à la façon dont l'information sociale, comme l'image qu'on se fait de la personne qui parle ou qui écrit, entre dans le traitement des phrases.
I coordinate the ANR project SoPHIa on the social personae evoked by French variants. At Paris 8, I co-direct the Licence in Language Sciences and teach psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and experimental methods.

I study how people process sentences, and how what they know or assume about the speaker or writer shapes this processing. I work within expectation-based models of comprehension, and run experiments with eye-tracking (reading and visual world), self-paced reading, acceptability judgments, and production and perception tasks, analysed with Bayesian mixed-effects models.
J'étudie la façon dont on traite les phrases, et comment ce qu'on sait ou suppose de la personne qui parle ou qui écrit influence ce traitement. Je travaille dans le cadre des modèles prédictifs de la compréhension, avec des expériences en oculométrie (lecture et monde visuel), lecture autorythmée, jugements d'acceptabilité, production et perception, analysées avec des modèles mixtes bayésiens.
My earlier work looked at linguistic and cognitive factors: relative clauses across languages (French, English, Mandarin, Cantonese), pseudo relatives, subject inversion, implicit causality, cross-domain priming from mathematics to syntax, and the role of empathy in prosody. More recently I have focused on social factors: grammatical gender, stereotypes, gender-inclusive writing and the social personae that linguistic variants evoke.
Mes premiers travaux portaient sur des facteurs linguistiques et cognitifs : les relatives dans plusieurs langues (français, anglais, mandarin, cantonais), les pseudo-relatives, l'inversion du sujet, la causalité implicite, l'amorçage des mathématiques vers la syntaxe et le rôle de l'empathie dans la prosodie. Je me concentre maintenant sur les facteurs sociaux : genre grammatical, stéréotypes, écriture inclusive et personae sociales associées aux variantes linguistiques.

SoPHIa · Social Persona and Human Interaction
When we read or hear a variant such as gender-inclusive writing (étudiant·es) or stylistic subject inversion, we infer something about who is writing or speaking. SoPHIa asks whether these social personae, in turn, shape how sentences are processed. The project builds on noisy-channel models of comprehension, in which readers combine the input with their prior expectations to infer what was meant. Here, those expectations include expectations about the speaker. A form that fits the persona should be easy to process, while a form that does not should be more surprising, or more likely to be treated as noise.
The project combines production experiments, norming of persona images and eye-tracking. Team: Célia Richy (postdoctoral researcher) and Yulia Medvedeva (research intern).
